D-Day 80 Service of Remembrance
The Royal British Legion hosted a Remembrance Service to mark 80 years since D-Day within the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum and Dordon pupils were invited to attend. Not only did we attend but we also read a poem out during the service!
This year, we have been working with the Arboretum and have participated in many workshops so we jumped at the chance to create a D-Day poem with Dan, the poet in residence, and perform it on the day when we were asked. I attended the event with the children and I was truly stunned by the scale of the service and how awe inspiring it all was. The children took it in their stride and were not worried by the 2,000 people in attendance or the multiple cameras filming them. Instead, they honoured the service and the sacrifice of the D-Day generation through the utterly breathtaking performance of their poem, Freedom.
I am sure many of you saw the children on the evening news and Charlie and Amelia being interviewed on Sky news - what a triumph for Dordon. Commemorating D-Day 80 in this way will be a moment in history the children will never forget and on a personal note I am so very proud of Amelia, Jackson, Olivia, Charlie, Lexi, Naishe and Reeve, who were exemplary from start to finish.
